Interview: JD & The Straight Shot

The road to success isn't always necessarily a straight shot. Sometimes, there are bumps along the road, and that was quite literally the case for Marc Copely [guitar, vocals, pictured above on right] of JD and the Straight Shot. During his early days as a professional musician, he was involved in a near-fatal car accident after a show, that resulted in his resuscitation by the side of the road. However, this was not enough to hold him back. Since then, Marc has gone on to release two solo records, work with legendary artists such as B.B. King and Roseanne Cash, as well as produce records and play guitar for JD and the Straight Shot, who are currently on tour with none other than The Eagles. I had the privilege of speaking with Marc about all of the experiences he's had in his life so far, and how music has shaped who he is.

Interview: One Bad Son

There's nothing bad about Saskatoon's One Bad Son. They put the bad in badass, and like the title of their latest album, they were Made In The Name of Rock n Roll. I spoke with lead singer Shane Volk about their latest record, the creative process behind their music videos, and what it's been like to tour with bands like Def Leppard and Judas Priest.

Interview: Neck Deep

There is a lot of grey area between the peace and the panic, but at this point, it has come second nature to Neck Deep. The Welsh pop-punk group has been through more than the average band in their career so far. From signing to a major label in 2013, touring the world for most of the year, to dealing with loved ones passing away, it has been a non-stop whirlwind for these lads. However, they've kept their heads on, and they are striving ahead with an incredibly positive outlook on their music, and their lives - something they hope they can inspire fans to do as well. They have an incredibly balanced perspective on all of the emotions that they've had to deal with, from pain and sorrow, to complete joy, understanding that in life, we need a bit of both. I got to chat with lead vocalist Ben Barlow [pictured above, centre] prior to their show in Calgary, where we talked about the band's triumphant new record, The Peace And The Panic.

Interview: Sleeping With Sirens

We all know that in this day and age, you can’t believe everything you read or hear. But, if you’ve heard any gossip about Sleeping With Sirens still relentlessly pushing themselves to make the best music that they can, I can assure you that it’s the truth. It’s hard to believe that the band has only been together for just 9 years. They already have five studio albums under their belt, and not to mention that all five are drastically different and evolved from one another. Sleeping With Sirens show no signs of stopping and still remain one of the best acts in the emo/post-hardcore/rock scene. I sat down with Kellin Quinn [lead vocals, pictured above, center], Justin Hills [bass, pictured above, right center] and Nick Martin [rhythm guitar, pictured above, left center] at the Black Lounge, just hours prior to their show in Calgary in February. We talked about their latest record, Gossip, the Olympics, the legacy they hope to leave behind - oh, and we even got talking about “Hey There Delilah” by Plain White T’s.

Interview: Seaway

We all need a vacation. Sometimes, it's an actual vacation with sun and sand, but other times? It's immersing yourself and getting lost in an album. Oakville pop-punk band Seaway provides the perfect escape with their most recent album, Vacation. Vacation is a stunning display of pop-punk, packed with nostalgic sounds reminiscent of bands like Weezer and Jimmy Eat World, as well as an originality that makes Seaway stand out. In November, the band toured with Silverstein, and I sat down with lead singer Ryan Locke [pictured above, centre] to talk about the latest record, Canadian music, as well as his memories of Warped Tour and his thoughts about it coming to an end. Check out the interview below the cut, and be sure to check Seaway out before they hit Calgary again next week with Neck Deep!
